The New Poverties refer to injustices that provide major societal challenges. They can result from genocide, war, terror, climate change, massive environmental pollution, mass migrations, economic inequalities, water and food insecurity and social disruption.

The goal of the conference is to identify core ethical values and to seek win-win solutions to dealing with these issues in our region. It will bring together colleagues from the sciences and humanities, advocates and activists.

Morando Soffritti

Collegium Ramazzini; Ramazzini Institute

Morando Soffritti, M.D., is the Secretary General of the Collegium Ramazzini. He is also Honorary President of Ramazzini Institute where he previously served as Scientific Director. His research focuses on the identification of the causes of tumors, particularly those of industrial and environmental origin. Dr. Soffritti's research also includes the evaluation of substances that can be effectively used in chemoprevention, in particular for mammary cancer. More details.

Ruth Amir

Bar Ilan University

Dr. Ruth Amir is Senior Lecturer at the Departments of Political Science and Multi-Disciplinary Social Science at Yezreel Valley College. Her research focuses on genocide, particularly forcible child transfer, transitional justice, and the politics of victimhood. She is the author of numerous articles and several books, among which are: Twentieth Century Forcible Child Transfers: Probing the Boundaries of the Genocide Convention (2019); co-editor of Critical Insights: The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank (2017); Who is Afraid of Historical Redress: The Israeli Victim-Perpetrator Dichotomy (2012); The Politics of Victimhood: Historical Redress in Israel? (2012). Ruth is Director at the Galilee Center for Studies in Jewish-Christian Relations.

Nadav Davidovitch

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

Nadav Davidovitch, MD, MPH, PhD is an epidemiologist and public health physician. He is a Full Professor and Chair, Department of Health Systems Management at the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Guilford-Glaser Faculty of Business and Management at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. He teaches on health policy, public health, health promotion, the Israeli healthcare system, public health ethics, and global health. More details.

Elliot Berry

Hebrew University

Professor (Emeritus) Elliot Berry, from the Hebrew University, is co Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopaedia on Food Security and Sustainability (Elsevier) and a Specialty Chief Editor for Nutrition and Environmental Sustainability He is currently a member of the United Nations Multistakeholder Committee on Sustainable Food Systems. Berry has developed the concept of the <Sociotype> to understand how people cope with stresses of chronic disease in general, and food insecurity in particular. More details.

Barbara Swirski

Adva Center

Barbara Swirski is the founder and first executive director of Adva Center. Today she is director of Community Relations. Barbara is a sociologist and social entrepreneur: she was among the founders of the first shelter for battered women in Israel, in Haifa in 1977, and among the founders of the Adva Center, in 1991. Pinhas Alpert

Tel Aviv University

Prof. Pinhas Alpert took up the position of Head of the Porter School of Environmental Studies in Tel-Aviv University 2008- 2013, following 3 years as Head of the Department of Geophysics and Planetary Sciences. Prof. Alpert is a developer of a novel Factor Separation Method in numerical simulations (Alpert& Sholokhman, Cambridge Univ. Press, 2011), currently being adapted by many groups worldwide. He is a co-author of more than 340 articles (250 peer-reviewed; 90 in books). 2018 Recipient of the EGU Bjerknes Medal. More details.

Tamar Berman

Israel Ministry of Health

Dr. Tamar Berman is an Environmental Toxicologist. Her main activities at the Ministry of Health involve regulating chemicals such as pesticides, chemical disinfectants, and drinking water contaminants; and developing policy on an array of topics including air pollution and endocrine disruptors. Her primary research interest is assessing exposure to environmental chemicals in the Israeli population. She holds a Ph.D. from the Hebrew University’s School of Pharmacy.

Elihu Richter

Hebrew University

Prof. Elihu D. Richter MD MPH is Director of the Jerusalem Center for Genocide Prevention. He is the retired head of the Unit of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the Injury Prevention Center at Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Public Health and Community Medicine. His past work focused on prediction and prevention of toxic and physical agents in the work and community environment. In recent years he has been working on epidemiologic models for prediction and prevention of genocide, mass atrocities and terror, with specific emphasis on the cause-effect relationship between hate language and incitement and these outcomes.

Gidon Bromberg

Eco-Peace Middle East

Gidon Bromberg is the Israeli Director of EcoPeace Middle East. EcoPeace is a unique regional organization that brings together Jordanian, Palestinian and Israeli environmentalists to promote sustainable development and advance peace efforts in the Middle East. Mr. Bromberg has written extensively on the relationship between water issues and Middle East peace and has presented before the US Congress, Eurpean Parliament and UN forums. Mr. Bromberg, an attorney by profession, is an alumni of Monash University in Australia, Washington College of Law at American University and Yale University's World Fellows program.

Yoram Finklestein

Share Zedek Medical Center

Professor Finkelstein is a graduate of the Israel Technological Institute (MD degree) and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (PhD degree). He specialized in Clinical Neurology and was a Neurobiology fellow at the Weizmann Institute of Science. His professional activity combines basic research in Israel and USA with clinical in-hospital neurology and toxicology service and unit in Jerusalem, alongside academic teaching and public activities at parliamentary and governmental levels.
